The archives of the St Vincent Province of the Brothers of Charity are to be found at the Provincial House in Ghent.

Those archives contain various types of documents: the actual archives that consist of registers, letters, forms, reports, newspaper and magazine articles but also congregational publications such as constitutions, prayer books for the Brothers, schoolbooks, pedagogical publications, general periodicals for Brothers and lay staff, books and manuals on (mental) healthcare, specialised periodicals on psychiatric nursing,… Also numerous loose documents, books, and magazines that were published for occasions such as jubilees, biographical articles and studies about the founder of the Congregation: Peter Joseph Triest, and documents relating the history of the Brothers of Charity can be found there too.

The archives of the Brothers of Charity are, in fact, also a kind of library that aims to preserve its own publications, whether they were meant for internal use or to be used in a much broader context, and make them available to researchers. Apart from written and printed documents, the archives also hold a lot of audiovisual material, amongst other things, a large collection of old photographs.

Opening Hours

The archives are open
on working days from 8.00h until 12.00h and from 12.30h until 16.30h.
However, note that you should make an appointment beforehand.
