Heritage Day: an outsider among us

Karel Frans Drenthe, Museum Dr. Guislain, Ghent.

Humour rarely shouts for attention. Instead, it hides in a small detail or an unexpected nuance. Slow art is a way of looking that invites you to take the time to truly experience an artwork. You begin to notice details, emotions and stories you would otherwise miss. On Heritage Day, we go in search of subtle hints and moments of lightheartedness in an artwork from the museum’s collection.

Register for the workshop:

Heritage Day 2026 explores how humour bridges gaps — and draws boundaries. Humour is everywhere: from the satire of the court jester to the subtle hint of an internet meme. Sometimes disarming, sometimes painfully accurate, sometimes just within the limits. HAHA Humor examines how laughter brings us together, but also how jokes can cross lines, hurt or exclude. Humour evolves with time and tells us something about who we are — and who we once were.
