The art collection is back! South African art photographer Roger Ballen takes a close look at our collection.
“I regard myself as a contemporary artist rather than an outsider artist, but my work shares the movement’s fascination with psychological depth and unconventional expression. Through my unique visual style and rejection of conventional beauty and documentary realism, my practice aligns closely with the ethos of Art Brut. I have always been fascinated by the expression of psychological immediacy present within the Art Brut movement.
For this exhibition, I chose to select works centred on the theme of the human figure. There is a directness in these works that speaks its own language more powerfully than words. Their visual authenticity immediately reveals the essence of the innermost self and challenges conventional distinctions between sanity and madness, order and chaos, and art and instinct.”
